Summer Activity: Let's Have a Cookout!

Love the grilling goggles.
So, kids, you call it barbeque or cookout? We've always called it barbeque. Maybe it's a western thing.
Mesquite wood, secret recipe barbeque sauce.

Mmmm, what's in the foil? Smells good.
And here are activities while we wait for that good smelling barbeque.

Kids of all ages can help with the cookout. Grown-ups, supervise, and be the judge of who is capable of doing what.

Kids can cut, wrap, transport items back and forth from the kitchen, organize the table settings, be the commissioner of condiments, pour the drinks, check the ice supply, shoo the flies, slap the mosquitoes, and crack jokes.

Here are some jokes, especially for the Fourth of July.

Now, grown-up talk. I'm surprised there's not a cooking show called Barbeque Wars.

Here in the desert, don't have to worry so much about bugs--Avon's Skin So Soft is a great insect repellant, BTW. If you are a vegetarian, don't ever feel left out. Apparently anything can be barbequed.

Had to put up something offbeat. Barbequed salad? Couldn't find an appetizing pic for this link.

My SoCal hibachi. A little grubby, but efficient.
Our barbeque is more California traditional. Small, with briquets. No fuss. But great smell and taste. Surprising control over cooking. These are called Pub burgers (without the pub.) They have cheese, onion, and other goodies in the paddy. I developed a secret recipe dressing for these very burgers! But I'll share it soon. Hint: avocadoes.

Grilling over an open fine,  keeping connected with our Neanderthal ancestors.

Here's some music to barbeque by:

Summer Activity: Grow Flowers! (Moss Roses)

These vibrant flowers are fascinating for kids. Moss Roses are photosensitive, closing at night. One plant will have many blossoms of varying bright colors that surprise you in the morning when they open.  Bees and butterflies love them. And, they are easy to grow. But, they don't have any special fragrance.
Diverse colors on these cheerful blossoms.

The plant looks sort of like ice plant. A kid can break off a piece of this plant and stick it in a pot and water daily. Moss rose is very resilient and will grow easily.

These cuttings were stuck in the planter just several days ago and are producing blossoms.

That's a long, lean sunflower stem in the center pot.

The bright blossoms are magnets for butterflies and bees.

This post is an excerpt from my blog: MzTeachuh's Enjoying Cooking and Gardening http://tayloreducational.blogspot.com/

Kindergartener's portrait of Emily Dickinson after reading this poem.

The bee is not afraid of me.

I know the butterfly -

The pretty people in the Woods
Receive me cordially -

The Brooks laugh louder
When I come -
The Breezes madder play;
Wherefore mine eye thy silver mists,
Wherefore, Oh Summer’s Day?

Summer Activity: Keeping Butterflies, Bees and Hummingbirds Happy

This is a Checkered White Butterfly on my flowering mint today.
Butterflies, bees and hummingbirds have similar preferences. Flowers! Annual flowers, perennial flowers, vegetable flowers, flowers on fruit trees, herb flowers--you name it.

Catering to the hummingbirds and butterflies.
Though hummingbirds do prefer trumpet-shaped red flowers, like petunias. Butterflies prefer blue flowers, like lobelia.

So we have many baskets full of both flowers hanging or in borders.

The flowers are regularly visited by generations of Anna's hummingbirds that live and nest in our yard. The mom hummingbirds use spider webs to make the nest. They nests are so tiny, a little larger than the size of  a computer key.

Baby hummingbird in our Fruitless Mulberry tree.
We get Painted Lady butterflies, Monarchs, Swallowtails, Umber Skippers and the White Cabbage pictured above I noticed this afternoon. At least, these are the butterflies I have identified. I am a novice.

Dusky Skipper

Painted Lady on Rabbit Brush, grows naturally here.

Our home is in a rural area near Mojave Narrows Regional Park, so I can't take much credit for attracting the birds, bees, and butterflies. But I try to make them happy.

I'm glad to report our bees are very active and productive.
