Hispanic Heritage Month: Hilda Solis

Hilda Solis, politician extraordinaire

Hilda Solis is a politician from California whose parents were from Mexico and Nicaragua. They met at a citizenship class. Hilda attended school in the greater Los Angeles area, gaining degrees from Cal Poly Pomona and USC. She was always interested in public service. This last year, she completed tenure as the Secretary of Labor in President Obama's cabinet. Prior to that she was in the State of California's government as well as the US Congress. Right now Hilda says she wants to be close to her aged mother, and will look to run for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 2014.

Hilda did not grow up in a privileged community. Her teachers actually discouraged her from going to college, except for one counselor (who is probably now saying, "I told you so!") Her parents were community minded, supporting the workers in the area. Hilda has constantly supported progress for the well-being of workers, and in particular, women. She hopes to do that in Los Angeles.

Here are her words as she resigned from the cabinet in January of this year.

There is so much more that Hilda has accomplished mentioned in the following article. And it appears she has just begun. Maybe she'll run for president--I'd vote for her.
