An Entire Life in Twelve Minutes

The Lovers, Pablo Picasso

This piece by Chopin and interpreted by Rubinstein is said to express a lifetime in twelve minutes; joy, peace of mind, conflict then decision. All of it. Finding love and living love.

To Game Or Not To Game?Tweets of the Day 7/13/12

This research is so notable and interesting:

1. Impacts of playing video games on learning in children
http://jinayang.myweb.uga.edu/edit6900/resources/report.pdf

Here is a quote and recommendation from the author:

Educate yourself by locating sources of positive information about digital kids, about video gaming, and what your kids are learning from their games and by getting a feel for what it’s like to learn from games
• Start asking your kids the right questions: ask open-ended questions that show you are truly curious to find out about what they are involved in.
• Educate your family by sharing articles and quotes
• Look over your kid’s shoulder (with permission)
• Go game browsing with your kids
• Play a game or two yourself
• Help organize LAN parties and/or start a game club: this is a radical solution for those who really get into games

2.  This article is also a little old, but still has value, I believe.

What Kids Learn That’s POSITIVE From Playing Video Games
http://www.marcprensky.com/writing/prensky%20-%20what%20kids%20learn%20thats%20positive%20from%20playing%20video%20games.pdf

The impact is not always good?

3. The Impact of Video Games on Children
http://www.pamf.org/preteen/parents/videogames.html

It seems to me technology in general has given kids new skills, of course.  They are better artists from participating in video games, the hand/eye coordinating is enhanced, tech knowledge improves; but kids also more desensitized to violence, will stereotype groups and genders more readily, and know a great deal about sophisticated weapons, and not in a peacekeeping way.  About 3/4 of middle school boys I've asked will express the desire to 'be a sniper when I grow up.'

In other words, the quality of the video games are not being monitored (my constant question of any child's activity: is it age appropriate?) and the quantity of hours spent is not being supervised. Psychologists say the human mind engages in fiction as though it is fact. So what are the kids experiencing for multiple hours a day?
Guess you could say, we need to parent up and guide the kids when it comes to video and online games. But what else is new.

Comicon Day 2: Costumes R Us

Thank you, Avengers for saving the earth, and supporting  the synthetic wig economy
Imagination runs rampant, to coin a phrase, at Comicon. Why not? It's really fun. Here are some of the fascinating folks I encountered today.

Chewbacca about to give me a hug.

Anime characters, one adjusting the other's head.

This is the Total Rekall Kar. We couldn't find Kitt.

Here's a mom and son in costumes I don't recognize, but they're cool anyway.

Lots of small children like the littlest Supergirl.

And this one to the right, always with the jokes.

Man, I hate it when that happens

The Zombie Walk isn't until Saturday, but they were still out and about anyway.
The one to the left is a teacher zombie: no wonder CST test scores were flat.
The one to the right was in front of the Convention Center trying to catch the San Diego Transit to Escondido.

I was very excited to have an autographed and illustrated Mad Art of Caricature! book by Tom Richmond, one of the artists for Mad Magazine, an art form that helped me survive my teenage years and beyond with a humorous bent. He drew Alfred E. Newman on the title page! How cool is that?

Maybe Darwin was right.

Woo hoo! I now have a Fringe bag! I am so validated.

1. Comic-Con 2012 official bags spotlight "Big Bang Theory," "Fringe" and more.

Comicon Preview Day

Its huge. Really huge. The preview day was just an introduction, and I didn't really get around to all the booths. I did see some familiar faces, new machines, and lots of entertainment.
'Top down driving I like."
Petco Park down the street.

It was a lovely walk to the Convention Center for the Comicon Preview.
Never know who you might meet on the way. Yoda and Obishawn, for example.

San Diego loves Comicon.
It's international news.

The Gaslamp District has lots of pleasant shops and restaurants. The Civic Center is right by the Petco Baseball Park on the San Diego Bay. It is remarkably beautiful with a view of the elegant Coronado Bridge.

Something for everyone doesn't begin to cover the variety of pop culture offerings.
Make Your Own Anime
The Walking Dead Vehicle: the Driving Dead?

We have chances to take pics with favorite characters. Here I am with Super Friends (I think Wonder Woman has had some work done.)

The Ultimate Pop Star of Star Wars: Boba Fett

Here is the absolute star of the day. Fans of all ages
totally freaked out to see him, and it was as though Star Wars
paparazzi were there, the cameras were flashing.
It was Boba Fett.

During the next few days at Comicon more fans wear costumes, there are panels with the producers, writers, actors of television and film. Gamemakers are here, too. Pop culture pops.

The Coronado Bridge in the distance; from my digs in SD; and, wow, a McDonald's!

Much Ado About Nothing Tweets of the Day 7/8/12

And aren't we glad this is much ado about nothing?

1. Monday’s Internet ‘blackout’ appears to fizzle out

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/doomsday-internet-blackout-dns-changer-fizzle-172421519.html

And probably more social, less bored, and safe.

Man, the whole family's chillaxin'.

2.  Babies in dog-owning families may be healthier

http://news.yahoo.com/babies-dog-owning-families-may-healthier-041915748.html

Personally, I think there is something to this; it seems boys and girls have different learning styles. I did better in Grade 9 without the cute boy distraction, and I still blame Ron T. for the C- in Algebra II with Trig. for distracting me with his cute surfer boy looks.

3.  More public schools splitting up boys, girls

http://news.yahoo.com/more-public-schools-splitting-boys-girls-182128857.html

If there are no boys in class, the girls are more likely to wear their glasses.

Just adolescents?

Buckle Your Seatbelts, Serious Tweets for Monday Tweets of the Day 7/9/12

Here is a collection of very serious tweets.

This happened in a nearby district, and it is still not clarified.

1. What Really Happens When Parents Pull the "Parent Trigger?"

http://www.prwatch.org/news/2012/07/11612/should-parents-pull-parent-trigger

Thank you again, KQED. Great article.

2. Three Things to Unlearn About Learning

“Kids will not put up with delivery too much longer. They’ll expect something much different,” Richardson said. Rather, educators must hand over control of learning to kids, and understand that there are lots of ways to learn what they need to and want to learn."

http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2012/07/three-things-to-unlearn-about-learning/

Always connecting music and art to other disciplines does undermine the intrinsic value of the arts.

3. Why Arts Education Is Crucial, and Who's Doing It Best

http://www.edutopia.org/arts-music-curriculum-child-development

This is hardly serious.

4. Does kindergarten lead to crime? Fact-checking N.H. legislator's 'research'

http://news.yahoo.com/does-kindergarten-lead-to-crime--fact-checking-n-h--legislator-s--research-.html

Please don't let this next article worry you. Just be on the look out for how to help your child if you think something may be developing somewhat differently.

5. Family History of Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder May Up Kids' Risk for Autism

 And something positive!

Accentuate The Positive

Positive Energy unpluged, Lalit Jain
Let's have some music with that thought. You choose which version you prefer. I can't choose.

1962

Aretha Franklin- Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IP9h40z0sk

Louis Armstrong - Accentuate The Positive (New Years Eve 1945)

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC7DO-luqYw

1945

Ac-cen-tu-ate the Pos-i-tive by Johnny Mercer

You've got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with Mister In-Between

You've got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene

(To illustrate his last remark
Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark
What did they do
Just when everything looked so dark)

Man, they said we better
Accentuate the positive
